Video Game Reviews of Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion Expansion PackCustomer Review: The Decline of Rome? You Decide Summary: 5 StarsBarbarian Invasion (BI) is a great expansion to Rome Total War (RTW). I have played RTW and Medieval Total War and its expansion Viking Invasion. I definitely think this is the most fun of the bunch. BI takes place 400 years after RTW on the same general map, but the regions and cities have been re-zoned to match changes in history. Rome is now truly an empire, but it is an empire in decline. It has been divided into the Western and Eastern Empire as a result of growing too large to be manageable. BI is more challenging than RTW. There are new enemies such as the Franks, Goths, Alamanni, Saxons, and Sassanids, but more importantly there are Hordes like the Huns and Vandals. Some Hordes start at the beginning of the game and others are created when the barbarian factions lose all of their cities. The Hordes make you change your whole strategy of play. You have to be selective when attacking to avoid driving a barbarian tribe from their last refuge and causing the whole tribe to take up arms. Playing as the Western Empire is especially difficult as you start the game with cities about to revolt and a treasury that is sinking faster than the Titanic. Your governors steal more for themselves than they put into the treasury. I had to disband valuable troops and sell off building to stop from going bankrupt. I would suggest playing RTW a couple of times to hone your skills before diving into BI.
There are other enhancements to the game. Generals can be recruited instead of only being family members. This was a annoying limitation in RTW. They can even change sides based on loyalty without being bribed. One of the Western Empire Rebel generals switched sides and helped me retake the rebel city. BI also allows you to make night attacks, but I have not had a chance to use this yet. Religion has also become a factor in the game. The Roman Empire was in the midst of converting to Christianity at this period and this leads to much unrest in the empire. Cities are definitely more difficult to manage, but it is possible even on very difficult setting. I also found diplomacy much more difficult while playing BI on very difficult setting. No one wants to be the friends of the Romans, they want to kill you and take your money, lands, and women.
If you have mastered RTW, try your hand at Barbarian Invasion and find yourself enthralled again.
If you are truly interested in this time period, I recommend reading A Short History of Byzantium by John Julius Norwich or the full trilogy it is based on. Norwich's book describes the split of the Roman Empire and focuses on the Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire) until their destruction in 1453. It is a great resource. I also recommend The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire by Edward Luttwak. This book deals with Roman military / diplomatic strategy from the first century to third century A.D. You might even learn some new tactics to apply to the game.
