Video Game Reviews of Poker Academy V2 (Win/Mac)

Customer Review: Excellent learning tool
Summary: 5 Stars

This program is such an excellent learning tool, that I hesitate to review it. Why? If everyone else starts using it, that could take away some of my edge in the game. *wink*

The bots all have their own playing styles. Some are aggressive, some passive, some sneakier and others more straightforward. Many adjust to your playing style, while others don't seem to be quite so perceptive. All in all, it's quite a bit like a real game, but without putting your money on the line. However, it plays as though there is real money involved, which makes it better than playing against other players online for free.

I have not experimented with different advisors, but have found that it's better for me to ignore what the default ones tell me to do.

Customer Review: TYPICAL POKER GAME: BETTER THAN AVERAGE
Summary: 3 Stars

As do all, or most all, computer poker games, this one targets BEGINNERS! There's a big market out there and there's certainly a lot of agents, representing a lot of professional poker players, who are jumping at the opportunity to tap the so-called "fish" market for some BIG bucks! This product competes with the aforementioned market quite well: lots of similarities between the various computer poker products.

This is another of those computer poker games with a limited data base of randomly delt hands: too many repeats and too frequently repeated! This is a matter one should consider a nagative with respect to computer poker games. Although, it is a little better than the average computer poker game: 3 stars. NOTE: products like this, in my opinion, are for fun and are not going to make you a successful player at professional levels.

Customer Review: You can't be serious!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I was very excited when I ordered this game, as I am an avid Texas Hold em' player. However, upon recieving it and playing it, I was very dissappointed. For being fairly new, the programmers should have randomly dealt the cards. I had the same hands repeatedly in all of the games. It got to the point where I could tell you the next hand I would be dealt, along with the winner and the hands they were dealt. The game would freeze repeatedly also, not worth the money!!

Customer Review: Great poker game, but use v2.0 not v2.5
Summary: 4 Stars

I would highly recommend Poker Academy. It has a lot of great features and is smooth and fun to play. I think the other reviews cover all the great features (great AI, detailed stats, a helpful advisor, great online play) so I would like to focus on the difference between versions 2.0 and 2.5. The following is going to seem like a lot of nitpicky stuff, and it's mostly here just to help people decide if they want to upgrade to v2.5 or not. Despite the following, I would highly recommend this product because of its overall quality. If you order this product and get 2.0 and are connected to the Internet, you will be offered to upgrade to v2.5 for free. I would consider passing on 2.5 and waiting for 2.6 or 3.0. Here is why:

- In version 2.5, the background of the stats windows is changed from a nice red to an ugly gray with orange type. Yuck.

- The large round easy-to-click betting buttons are replaced by smaller square gray buttons that are harder to click on.

- When I pot is split, and there is an uneven amount, it will give one of the players 50 cents. This can be extremely annoying and distracting because you can never bet that 50 cents so the stacks around the table might look like this for example: $8,700, $10,200, $1,500, $23,500, $17,500.50. It looks stupid.

- There is a minor bug when selecting the settings for a customized tournament. I was playing No-limit Poker Circuit with 162 players to practice for an upcoming live tournament I've entered. Poker Circuit tournaments start with a default of 10 players so you have to enter "162" into the players box. Then you click Start. Except when I do this, it starts with only 10 players. So I have to quit the tournament and do it again. Then it registers the 162 I entered. Not sure why, but this did not happen in v2.0.

- The default payouts changed. This isn't a huge deal, but it's yet another thing that could have just been left alone. In the 162-person tournament I described above, the top 18 people or so (I forget the exact amount) would finish in the money in v2.0. In version 2.5, only the top 3 win prizes. Maybe they changed this to more accurately reflect a real Poker Circuit tourney, but I got kind of angry when I finished 6th and didn't win a dang thing.

- Here's a more general comment about all versions: The Advisor doesn't seem to account for bluffing. The Advisor will give you advice on whether to Fold, Call, or Raise. And it seems to do it strictly on what your card is, the size of the pot and remaining stacks, etc. But it doesn't seem to account for bluffing. If you want to win a real tournament, you're going to have to bluff and call in situations when you think you're being bluffed. So as you play Poker Academy and learn, you're going to have to keep your eyes out for these opportunities and ignore the advice of the Advisor.

Again, I would still definitely get this product as it's better than most other poker software packages.

Customer Review: Just what you need to learn or improve!
Summary: 5 Stars

Great!!! You learn quick and get better everyday. Not completed like the other four I tried.
