Customer Review: Say goodbye to your friends and family...
Summary: 5 Stars

Because you could very well lose touch with them after playing this game!

City of Heroes allows you to create your own Superhero with your own set of superpowers, and basically go fight crime in the streets of Paragon City. As you advance in level, you are given new powers and new missions.

If you like your games to be 'your own,' then this is definitely the game for you. It is virtually impossible for you to run into the same hero. You build your hero from the ground up, give them a basic set of powers, and boom...you are off to complete missions, either as a team or solo.

CoH is truly the best MMOG out there. The graphics are stunning, the game itself is ever changing, and the hero's powersets are just plain fun to work with. You can't believe how much time you spend immersed in missions or just plain hunting. In ordinary life, you can't hit a mugger with supercharged lightening bolts to help a lady get her purse back. Thanks to CoH, you don't ever have to wonder what that joy is like.

You can't go wrong with this game...it's just too much fun to pass up. However...word of caution: DO pay attention to the system requirements. If your Video in particular isn't up to par, you'd better go shopping for a Videocard as well.

Customer Review: City of Momentary Heroes - Not long term players
Summary: 3 Stars

Like many, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in one of the most cutting edge MMORPG's available. Let's face it, up to this point, every MMORPG has been a cookie cutter of the other. Until, Cryptic Studios and NCsoft brought us City Of Heroes. I have to say you can tell a lot of intelligent people are behind the development of this game, as it literally broke a stale mold...

So What's Wrong?

As fascinating as the concept is, (And who didn't want to be a superhero when they were little?) the actual gameplay factor becomes repetitive and mudane after level 20. It becomes a really monotonous level gring where the fun is lost somewhere in the demand to advance. It becomes increasingly difficult to fetch new experiences to maintain interest, and eventually the player comes to realize, while the concept itself is new for the moment, it has no momentum.

There is also little opportunity for immersion. The actual game map is broken up into dozens of 'zones' where you can feeel isolated from the world around you, thus not apart of things as a whole. As where in other games, like Dark Age Of Camelot, or World Of Warcraft, you play with thousands of other people in a community type atmosphere in one fluid world (With the exception of dungeons.) Another dividing factor between 'you' and the rest of Paragon City is the lack of incentive to group. Most people are habitually grinding away with the intent to advance, not commiserating with other players, so you easily become and Island unto yourself.

Finally, one of the only ways to advance in this sysytem of gamelay is to get missions from contacts. These missions send you to warehouses, sewers, other zones and 'ghettos' to kills one or more targets, or retrieve information. This exact formula is fun for 20 levels or so, but soon after become blatantly repetative and eventually boring.

If you are looking for short term entertainment, something to break your current routine, it's a fine purchase. However, if you're looking for a long term investment, something to actually sink your teeth into and reach a specific goal while constantly interacting with an enabling world, this is most definitely a poor choice. Kids and adults alike will revel in City Of Heroes for a couple of weeks then gets an uncontrollable itch to go elsewhere, and your money goes down the drain.

Customer Review: Fantastic game!
Summary: 5 Stars

While my husband and I both enjoy computer and video games, it is very rare that we find one that BOTH of us enjoy, much less will play together. City of Heroes (CoH)is definitely the game for us! There are many cities to explore and the range is virtually endless. (...) there are substories to help make gameplay more enjoyable. Along with that, there are humorous and fun emotes to make chatting a great time...especially in the dance club.

While it's true that at certain levels gaining XP becomes extremely difficult, this does not detract from the game, in my opinion, since gaining Experience Points (XP) is not the only point of the game. Give it a try and enjoy it for what it is.

Customer Review: Fun game, especially for playing 1-2 hours at a time

I've tried out several online multi-player games since I got dsl and I've never felt like playing them for more than few months due to the massive time investment and studying they seem to require. City of Heroes breaks away from that routine. I've been playing since April '04 and I'm still having a great time. They've stripped away all the resource gathering and economy simulation stuff and just left the player to concentrate on foiling the schemes of villains. I went ahead an d bought 6 months of subscription time up front and got the price break on the monthly fee. The game adds new places, new bad guys, and new interesting things every few months, so the game keeps on getting better.

There have been some wild stuff that the company has been testing on the "Test Server" that a prior reviewer referred to. Those experimental changes have already been tweaked back and aren't going to be transferred to the Live servers where it counts. Every online multi-player game does tweaks on character abilities from time to time as the game evolves, and the designers for this game have been doing a good job of communicating with the players before changes are implemented. I feel like a buddy is running this game for me. There is another major update to the game in January coming and the testing reports from players have been intriguing to say the least.

New edit: We're looking at the 3rd update for '05 being released this August and a sequel called City of Villains around Xmas. Good times.

Anyway, give the game a try if you're interested in playing your own superhero. I wound up shelving my Playstation for this puppy. The first month's subscription comes with the game.

Customer Review: Absolutely disgusting

I have been playing this game for 2-3 months now. In issue 3, which is the latest patch for this game, NCSoft has drastically reduced the powers of certain player types making them worthless. NCSoft should have done this at the beginning of the game not at the middle of the game. I played 2 months to develop to the level I am in & now I realized that my archetype has become less powerful & more or less useless. I am a regeneration scrapper & they have taken down my shield in issue 3. I contacted NCSoft but they said they cannot do anything about it. Now If I had known in the begining that such changes will be done for this archetype, I would not have chosen this archetype. This is not ethical game development where one day NCSoft wakes up & drastically reduces the power of one archetype. They have absolutely no consideration for player who play a particular archetype & how their decision will affect these players. I spent so much time in developing this character and now I find my powers reduced making my character partially useless.& the response which I got from NCSoft is that I should not complain to them about this but should post it in the forum so that various members can discuss. What jerks?? This company does not know how to develop games, & one fine day they may wake up & cut other features, reduce features of an archetype etc., without even considering the players who are playing it. So there is absolutely no point in playing this game.

Further more in this game, there is only one thing to do kill..kill...kill -> get xp at a very very... slow rate -> level up. & this becomes very frustrating when a player is between 37-49. I am also playing World of Warcraft right now & tp tell you very frankly World of Warcraft is WOW. Players have got thousands of things to do & explore besides killing.Well, I will be switching over to World of Wwarcraft permanently.
