Video Game Reviews of City of Heroes Collector's DVD EditionCustomer Review: City Of Heroes rocks Summary: 4 StarsHaving owned City Of Heroes since it was released, a hard drive crash and a lost CD sent me hunting for a replacement. The DVD is my default choice when available, and the extra content made it even better. NC Soft keeps adding more and more material to the game with each publish and the bonuses they throw at you during certain holidays and such really make it more enjoyable. I play World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, but I refuse to give up my flying super heroes! Creating characters is almost as much fun as playing them!
Customer Review: FORGET IT! Summary: 1 StarsThis seems like a great game and all but I'm NOT going to pay a monthly bill just to play a game, no matter how good it is!I was just thinking about buying this game too.:(
Customer Review: CoH vs. WoW Summary: 5 StarsOK, being a previous WoW player moving to CoH I'll discuss the other side of the coin. Really which game you prefer depends on what you want to do. I played a mage in WoW, and a blaster in CoH. If you are the type of player that likes a fast-paced game where you can get to the action right away then CoH is more your game. I love the ability to get around. In WoW you walk at the same slow speed until level 40, in which they give you a horse for a ridiculous amount of money, which still doesn't boost your speed to an amazing level. They have mithril spurs which ups your mount speed, but you have to bypass other enchants and such that could go on your boots or gloves for the riding enchantments, or you could use a trinket to also up your speed but trinket slots can also be valuable and its a pain to have to switch them out to go quickly. So generally be prepared to spend a lot of your time in WoW actually getting to where you need to go, especially at higher levels. Griffon/Wyverns make it a little better by being able to take flight paths from city to city, these cost money to use, but its not a major hit to your finances once you get to level 20 or so.
Also I'm a big fan of the extensive customization in CoH. WoW you have your basic skills that can be somewhat customized by what talents you choose in your talent trees (you get a point per level after level 10 to put into talents) I was a frost/arcane specialist mage. However once you choose your talents you're locked in until you respec. In CoH you choose your powers and assign a number of slots with which you can put enhancements to up damage, accuracy, endurance cost reductions, endurance drains etc. etc. There are tons of enhancements to choose from which can customize your powers to your individual needs. If your needs change you can change the powers easily by switching out enhancements. Also, you can add extra slots as you level if you need to further enhance a power. A respec allows you to totally change all of your powers, slots, and even change which auxillary pools (travel powers and such) you want. Not to mention the vast customization of your character's appearance, which is just amazing in CoH, while in WoW you get no character scaling, all humans are the same build, same height as well as the other races and only change in appearance by what you wear, and the equipment can't be customized even by a 300/300 (maximum skill level) tailor. CoH gives you 4 costumes which can be incredibly customized to whatever look you're trying to achieve, and they even let you change your look after you've created the costumes for a price.
WoW is a beautifully rendered game that looks better than CoH, but I think CoH gives a better gaming experience with fast action and a lot less wasted time walking around and deciding what it is you want to do. I also loved the novelty of Warcraft, being a huge fan of the series. Honestly the novelty wore off as I played.
As far as being repetitive, welcome to MMORPGs. All of them are repetitive, WoW is, CoH is... all of them are. Maximum experience in both games is achieved by grinding at higher levels, so its a question of what you're looking for. In my case I want the ability to get into the action quickly with a highly and easily customizable character, and CoH fills that need much better than WoW.
Oh, WoW seems to have a better high level game, once you hit 60 you've got battlegrounds and such and a big PvP ladder. I'm not a big fan of PvP and I'm more of a fan of being able to try different character combinations so starting a new toon at level 50 doesn't bother me. In my experience PvP just brings a bunch of whiners to the game. "My class is unbalanced!" or other BS is all you hear about. If you're a big fan of PvP, right now WoW is the best choice... Though City of Villians is coming out soon and we'll have to see what that brings with it.
OK, I've rambled enough, hopefully I've given as much of an unbiased view as possible comparing the two, though I do tend to lean towards CoH. Have a good day everyone :)
Customer Review: An Absolute Rip-Off Summary: 1 StarsThis game sounds like a whole lot of fun, but what you need to know is that it is a subscription game. ie if you don't agree to pay $15 a month then it won't work!! You do get the first 30 days free but after that expect to be paying out $$$. My kids were very disapointed and you would think that having purchased the DVD they would at least give you some version of the game that you could play for no extra cost....
Customer Review: It's fun, for a while... but it gets boring. Summary: 3 StarsI bought this game for my husband for Christmas. He enjoyed it enough that I bought a copy for myself. I enjoyed it for about 10 levels. Then it got boring. Typically, I am a hack & slash player, but I still require a story of some sort. And this game did not have sufficient story to keep me interested.
Yes, the graphics are pretty cool. Yes, the costume permutations are seemingly endless. But, I let my subscription expire after only 2 months, and moved on to World of Warcraft.
