Video Game Reviews of Aion: The Tower of Eternity Steelbook EditionCustomer Review: It's a lot of fun if you bot the grinding Summary: 3 StarsMost of these reviews (including ones from big name reviewers) about Aion are from people who only played to level 15-20 and quit. This one covers up to level 43, where I called it quits.
The game is divided into three parts; levels 1-10, 10-25, and 25-50. Many people have played 1-10 and love the game, then complain about the 10-25 mark. 10-25 is a bit of a grind, however if you actually follow the main story quests, you will have a good time. It is also very class dependant how much fun you will have. I played a cleric and assassin. A cleric is horribly slow to level, and is very group dependant past level 30. An assassin is a lot of fun to play and solo, but has a lot of issues with trapping runners they ambush and dying during boss fights due to aoe.
To put it plainly, this game starts at level 25. If you're not willing to gut out the 10-25 level mark, this game will wear you out. At 25 you get some nice cutscenes for the abyss, a tutorial on how abyss seiges work, and then you're back to grinding for xp and abyss points. Your level of fun in the abyss is dependant on the legion your in, and how much they want to go and hunt players.
Aion's PvPvE abyss system is the end-game, and for those of you who are used to the battlegrounds system in World of Warcraft and enjoyed it, you'll immediately feel right at home. You kill the other faction or the PvPvE race "balaur" for abyss points, and from those points you get gear. You gain noteriety based on the amount of areas you win seige battles on.
What makes this game unique, and is its main selling point are the strategic tower areas of the abyss. These are areas which a legion raids in order to control for abyss points and faction recognition. This requires a lot of planning. Also during your raid of a tower, at any time, the other faction can come in and mess your world up or steal your kill. This is what Aion is all about (PvPvE). It can be very satisfying if you're into a dynamic encounter, or very frustrating when you wipe due to a cheap incoming legion at the wrong time. Having played in several major raids, these battles can, and will last for hours depending on if the other faction shows up, and how well the group knows the encounter.
Being able to experience seige areas in the abyss takes a good leader of a legion, a lot of time, and a lot of patience. Good legions require at least 5 hours a day for their members. I've seen some legion applications that require 80 hours logged on per week, no exceptions! Its a very cutthroat style end-game. However if you're already grinding out levels past 35 (where the quests start to get very, very, very repetitive) you probably have that much time to spare.
I, on the other hand, didn't have that much time to spare, so I botted my character from 32-42. When I did play, the abyss was enjoyable with friends. But soon they quit the game, and I was left to decide if I wanted to dedicate 6 hours a day to a game that I was botting just to keep up with the pack. In the end I sold the account.
I can't really say Aion is bad, just decent enough to play to experience the Abyss. It was a lot of fun in the beginning, and I think it has a lot of potential later on down the road when it releases an expansion. However the end-game system is just like WoW where you grind honor for gear. Only in WoW, you don't have to join the Legion of the month to enjoy pvp, you just queue up. Your enjoyment of Aion really depends on how much time you have to dedicate, and how much you like PvP mixed in with PvE raiding. If you don't like fighting other players, and don't like doing repeatable quests over and over, this game isn't for you.
As for my thoughts; I think a lot of people enjoyed Aion's start. Sadly the marketing from NCSoft said it "wasn't your typical Korean MMO grinder" and it was. I don't blame the Korean developers, but the NCSoft West advertisers who hyped the game and hid the end-game content from big-name reviewers to get a higher rating. If they actually played the end-game content, I almost guarantee they would have said it was poor and repetitive.
