Video Game Reviews of Mech Warrior 4: Mercenaries

Customer Review: Best 'Mech romp EVER!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are those who may may whine about it being stand-alone, but I personally don't mind. After all, there's over 40 missions to beat, four separate Mercenary legions to join, three different endings, and over 35 'Mechs! There are big, epic battles with as many as 15 'Mechs involved, and though that may seem like a small fight, you must remember that EVERYTHING involving giant robots is big. The graphics remain the same, though the developers did improve the textures for the older 'Mechs. This is especially true of the Black Knight, which had blurry chest textures in the Black Knight add-on for MechWarrior 4. Despite dated graphics engine, this game takes it for one last action packed ride, and makes itself a winner. If you're a 'Mech fan, or just like blowing stuff up, this is for you. Plus there's multiplayer! You can blow up Joe Schmoe who lives in Greenland from the comfort of your computer chair! Doesn't that sound fun?

Customer Review: Best Yet
Summary: 5 Stars

Personally I think this game is the best Mechwarrior game yet. I have Mech 3 and it's quite a jump. Your lancemates aren't total idiots anymore, though it still takes them time to do certain tasks and they don't always follow orders. That aside they are way better than the ones from 3. Nine times put of ten if you told them all to attack a target you could attack a target 1000m away, kill it and still get back into weapons range of the target that you lancemates were to kill. And that's in a Daishi. Now they just get in the way sometimes.

The weaponry is finnaly done right too. Clan versions of the weapons are accually significantly different. Their lasers are longer ranged, Their ballistics are lighter, and their missiles have better tracking. In fact Inner Sphere MRMs and SRMs don't track at all. Omnimech's now actually matter. Their omni slots let them carry any kind of weapon in them. This is why the Kodiak is king. Unfortunatelly you need the clan mech pack to use that but I have it; so it's all good.

Customer Review: Lost Value and increased price as a standalone.
Summary: 4 Stars

Battletech is a lot of fun and is going strong after 15 or so years, though its original form as a minature game is over and replaced with Mech Warrior: Dark Age, a very stupid and pointless game. The mech warrior video games used to be a lot more bound into Battletech but MW4 is still very fun. Vengeance was a dream, Black Knight was even better, and the Mek Paks were a good holdover to Mercs. Mercs was an expansion marketed as a standalone, which made it loose so much. The original maps were scrapped, MP game types minimized, weapons removed, and even some of the AI complexity. The took out the CTF game type for crissake. Also it claimed "full compatibility" with the mek paks. You can still only use the meks in MP, and everything else in them ships with mercs. I mostly play MultiPlayer and would have given it two stars execept for the stellar single player. Managing a buiseness, finding conrtacts, buying equepment. It's a lot of fun. The missions can tend to get a little over slugfestty somtimes, but on the whole they are interesting and startegic. You get rewards for taking honorable paths. (If you choose to fight the clans head on instead of ambush them you get a fully skilled pilot who works free). The number of choices is incredible. This game is worth [the money], and should be an expansion. I hope they fix all the MP problems in the sure to come WOB expansion and make it compatible with the mek paks in single player. Wait for the price to go down on this one.

Customer Review: The best of the best of the best of the best...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best. A huge amount of 'Mechs for use. The Mech Paks are almost useless except for their 'Mechs. Even then you can't use the Pak 'Mechs in the campaign. You do face Mech Pak 'Mechs in the campaign though. It's like subliminal advertising. The game play is excellent even though I still have a Pentium II 400Mhz. Microsoft recomends a 700Mhz processor. The CGI movie at the beginning isn't as good as some others. Solaris VII is finally included in the game. A kill bonus is included for every 'Mech you kill. Including Solaris there are 11 planets to visit. New Canton and Carse have one mission each. There are three different endings you can get. Late in the game you must decide between Steiner and Davion. Salvage is scripted. Having 8 'Mechs in the field under your command is fun. Add to that about 8 more not under your control on some missions battles can be fun. At the beginning there are four companies you can choose as a sponsor. There is finally a 20 ton 'Mech that is usable. Instead of a lot of voice actors giving the story it is text. I am getting sick of the Inner Sphere. BRING ON THE CLAN POINT OF VIEW MICROSOFT.
If you do buy this head over to www.mektek.net to get some maps and other files. It is possible to download a CTF mission pack and Vengeance and Black Knight terrains and maps for use in multiplayer.

Customer Review: Best of the series so far
Summary: 4 Stars

I own all of the Mechwarrior series that run on the PC except for the very first installment. This one is by the best of the lot. I love some of the new Mechs intriduced in this game - my personal favorite is the Gladiator in the assault class with the Hellhound in the medium class.

Now if only MS will release MechAssault on the PC I will be truly happy.
