Video Game Reviews of Escape from Monkey Island

Customer Review: Kind of a letdown
Summary: 3 Stars

I have played all 4 of the Monkey Island games and excluding the graphics this one is pritty bad. The plot makes no sence when looking at the old games. Shure this is susposed to be a kind of "modern" pirate world, but when it is this modern it takes away from the whole plot. When writing the storyline for this game Lucas Arts certanly did not do their best work. I do have to say it was very amusing for some reason. It is not a game that I wouldn't recomend, it has good graphics, good music and the 3d tranformation of the Monkey Island world worked very well. It is the poor storyline that gets in the way of all of these things. Recomended.

Customer Review: A Very Cool Adventure Game
Summary: 5 Stars

This game is the best adventure game I have ever played. It is very funny and everything is top notch, from the effects to the voicework. I have played Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine but that wasn't near as cool or fun as this one. Another thing that I liked was that there was no killing(except in one sequence where you meet your future self and after he gives you a gun you can shoot him with it if you want to, but that really isn't a good idea). The puzzles are cool and most -if not all- are logical. The voicework is superb and the insults can be very funny. The characters are really great and they each have a different personality. What's really funny is when you find pop-culture references. For Example:You may be exploring in the Mysts O' Tyme Marsh and in the swamp there's an X-Wing fighter(from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back). All in all, this game is really neat.

Customer Review: mmm. . .monkey island 4
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read a lot of bad reviews for this game. Lots and lots. I have absolutely no idea where they come from! I have never experienced any glitches with this game, nor had any problem with the dumb jokes or difficult puzzles. I rather ENJOY the dumb jokes and difficult puzzles. I find it difficult to trash the apex of Lucas Arts' Monkey Island series.

For those who are familiar with the series (i.e. have spent long, long nights sword fighting or talking to Murray): THIS GAME IS FOR YOU! You will be pleasantly reminded of all the fun in these games.

For those who are not yet familiar with the series (i.e. have not spent any nights sword fighting, and are probably wondering who Murray is): THIS GAME IS FOR YOU! Yes, even novices, newbies, and greenhorns will enjoy this game.

So what are you waiting for?

Customer Review: A disappointing effort from Lucas Arts
Summary: 1 Stars

Being an avid adventure gamer for many years, I couldn't wait to grab a copy of the 4th instalment of the the famed Monkey Isand series, Escape from Monkey Island. Rest assured, I was the first one in line to buy Lucas Arts' new masterpiece, and seemingly the first to be truly dissapointed. Yes, I noticed the nifty 3D graphics, and wow those endless puns were mighty humorous...but what happened to the logical puzzles? The fun story? What happened to playing a game without a bug or glitch every other second? These unanswered questions plagued me as I watched this lackluster game unfold. To be fair, the game was not HORRIBLE, just far infererior previous MIs, and semi-disgraceful to Lucas Arts, who has published many of my all time favorites (i.e. Day of the Tentacle, Curse of Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango). I fervently urge you to purchase one of the aformentioned games instead of this hastily thrown together mess. For the record, Escape from Monkey Island does NOT deserve 1 star: 2 or 3 would be more appropriate. However, this is my futile attempt to balance the scales and set some confused and askew "adventure gamers" straight. This game is for shame, Lucas Arts! Better luck (and effort) in the future.

Customer Review: If you don't like it then, well, ...
Summary: 5 Stars

Here we go, one more time, on the wildest ride of our lives. Monkey Island has returned.

Some people don't like it for the controls; some people don't like it for the puzzles; some people don't like it for the humor. I like it for the fun.

MI 4 once more features newly-weds Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley-Threepwood, returning to Melee Island from their honeymoon. However, something is amiss in the Tri-Island Area. First of all, Elaine has been declared dead and somebody else is running for governor - Charles L. Charles (note the initials - yep, you guessed it), and you know the motto - when there's only one candidate, there's only one choice. However, Charles isn't the only problem - a reclusive Australian land developer named Ozzie Mandrill is buying up all the real estate in the Tri-Island Area and replacing it with family-friendly (NOOOOOO!!) joints such as the Lua Bar, Planet Threepwood, etc. as well as re-educating pirates and turning them into productive members of society (double-NOOOOOOOOOOO!!). As Guybrush, you must put a stop to Mandrill's evil plans and save the Caribbean from a fate worse than death and re-animation.

I've heard several complaints about the new interface. Granted, yes, it isn't quite as good as that of MI 3 or even the original two, but I've found that it just takes some getting used too. The controls, I found, were just as good (if not better) than those of the prequel. While many complain about often turning around when they wished to simply walk forward, I simply kept my eye on the invisible boundaries and did fine.

Close scrutiny has also been placed on the self-referential humor. Indeed, you may not understand the majority of the humor if you're a newbie (if you are, get the original three first) but if you're a MI veteran, then get ready for some great humor and voice-acting (again).

Actually, I found the gameplay superb in every respect. Unfortunately, I experienced some lockups on my aging computer. However, if you've got a new and improved computer, I'm almost certain you'll do fine.

MI 4 has been lauded and defamed; I go staunchly for the former with it, though. Get ready for some head-smacking monkey mayhem, folks!
