A long time ago, RPG's took place in Past-lands and involved epic swordfights and the slaying of Giant Rats, Spiders, Minotaurs, and just about every other Mythological creature from Alabi-jam.
That isnt the case with Fallout.
Fallout takes a Stark turn at the typical hack and slash Swordfighting RPGs, and goes in an entirely new direction.
The story is as followed: Life Sucks. America has Annexed Canada, Nuclear Catastrophe has left the world barren and destroyed, and to make matters worse, your dropped right into the middle of it. Deserts abound.
Now like I said, this isnt a Hack and Slash RPG. I was suprised to find I liked this combat BETTER then Hack and Slash (And just to iron out all the comments that may say: "Biased!", I am a Huge Diablo fan).
Since its entirely Turn-Based action, yes, The Combat is just a little bit slower, but you are required to think and plan your moves carefully.
Now upon starting Fallout, you are gifted upon 3 Pre-set characters: "Charismatic but not very strong, strong but not very smart, and a Female who I believe is a bit of both.) While you are allowed to cut corners and choose a pre-set character, the real fun/complexity comes from making one yourself. You are able to choose your name, age, and stats ranging from Agility, to Strength, to Intelligence. You are also able to tag 2 special Traits to give you an advantage. A word of caution, pick VERY Carefully, one mis-calculation, and it could be the meaning of life or death..
Now Then, The atmosphere in Fallout is grade A, Top-Notch quality. Upon leaving your Vault (Underground Fallout Shelter) where you have everything needed to survive, you are suddenly tasked with trying to survive. The game is designed to give you a constant feeling of uncertainty once you have left the comfort of your Vault. It always makes you think: "What if?" or "But now what..?".
So definitely get this package if your mildly interested in RPGs, or just love a massive game with seemingly endless amounts of Replay Value.

Fallout 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed game that took RPG'ing out of the dungeons and into a dynamic, apocalyotic retro-future.The science-fiction role-playing games Fallout and Fallout 2 have been bundled together for the complete post-nuclear-war game experience. In Fallout you are dwelling in a self-sufficient fallout shelter called Vault-13, three generations removed from the apocalyptic war. When your shelter's water filter breaks down, you are sent out into the unknown wasteland to find a replacement filter or a new source of fresh water. The Fallout adventure unfolds as a gritty tale of discovery, paranoia, and survival. Mature gamers are in for a classic role-playing game that has earned a cult following just as loyal as the fans of the Mad Max movies that inspired it.
Fallout 2 takes place 80 years after the events in the original game. You are the Chosen One, a tribal ancestor of Fallout's vault dweller. Your tribe has built a modest settlement in an isolated corner of the futuristic Californian wasteland, but you must find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit to sustain the village. During your adventure, you'll encounter misfits and monsters ranging from gangsters to supermutants. Twice as many weapons are at your disposal, including the M72 Gauss Rifle, M3A1 "Grease Gun" SMG, Louisville Slugger, H&K CAWS, and the Solar Scorcher. In addition, you can give your character combat postures such as berserk, aggressive, defensive, or cowardly.
Parents should be aware that the games contain violence and some sexual situations. Though you can adjust the tone down a bit through the main control panel, developments that occur on the adult setting are integral to the story.
