Video Game Reviews of Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor

Customer Review: Scary + challenging + fun = perfect game!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite of the first 20 Nancy Drew games. Seriously, it was so much fun, and I was constantly getting chills from the scary storyline. I was really needing this game as before this game HERinteractive wasn't really doing too great with their games.

Story-Your neighbor has asked you to go to England to check on her daughter, Linda. Linda has suddenly started hiding behind a curtain in her bedroom and refused to let anyone see her. She has also started to have temper tantrums, which according to her mother are totally unlike her. You soon realize that something supernatural may be behind this sudden change in behavior.

Graphics-Okay, so these didn't get too much better, but they are still good. All the spooky areas are dark, while the mansion is always lit up, and I did find the artwork rather well done.

Sound-The voice acting was very good in my opinion as was the music. There are lots of songs in this game, I thought, and I liked them all.

Gameplay-Everything is the same except you don't leave the manor ever and the puzzles are HARD. This was the first game where I found there were tons of puzzles and they were challenging without being frustrating. Whenever you get stuck you can ask a parrot for hints, but you cannot call Bess and George in this game although you can call Ned.

Fun-This game is so fun, and it is really scary, too. I just want to mention that some people will not want to play this game because it does talk of witches, werewolves, alchemy, and rituals. I didn't find it satanic or anything, but I think some people will want to skip this game if they don't like things like that.

Length-I must have played this 1 or 2 months! It was so fun! And, still, when I replay it, it takes me 12-15 hours to finish. It is really long, and I loved that!

This is the perfect PC game that I recommend to everyone except those who are concerned about the above mentioned. And, of course, small children should NOT play this game, but it is my favorite Nancy Drew game, if not my favorite PC game!

Customer Review: Current winner of the most irritating Nancy Drew game award.
Summary: 1 Stars

#11 Curse of Blackmoor Manor initially looked to be quite interesting as far as my personal tastes are concerned. It has astronomy, Greek muses, fairy changelings, and a friendly pet parrot. Yet this is my least favorite game so far. I think my irritation stems from having an obvious villain (the graphics for the face just scream villain before you ever get to a mystery), an unrealistic, annoyingly uncommunicative "friend" (Linda wants help but then will barely speak to you once you're there to help her with the mystery), issues with lighting in secret passages (I'm not a fan of small beams of light), moving rooms (poorly lit moving rooms just to amp up my irritation), puzzles that require too much back and forth between the rooms and/or the cellphone/inventory screens, too many forced side "games," and a mystery you can't actually take pro-active steps to solve (instead you are stuck in pointless puzzle land with things that have nothing to do with your actual case).

HER would be greatly served if it could come up with a way to more easily move between inventory/cellphone and the screen you're looking at, rather than trapping the cursor in boxes so that you can't move between the two or move things to get a better view of the items you're comparing. This is true of all the HER games I've played thus far, but the set up of Blackmoor takes something that's mildly irritating elsewhere and turns it into a frustrating feature that prolongs the game unnecessarily.

Customer Review: Can You Beat the "Curse"? **Minor Spoilers**
Summary: 5 Stars

The Curse of Blackmoor Manor was the first Nancy Drew game I had purchased, played, finished and thoroughly enjoyed. Nancy is called to the mysterious moors of England to check up on her old neighbor, Linda Petrov-Penvellyn who is ill under unusual circumstances. Shortly after moving into the ancient estate with her husband and step-daughter Jane, Linda came too close to a heavily veiled family secret, and now is suffering the consequences. Is she turning into the Blackmoor Beast, a werewolf-like creature rumored to have been created by Elinor Penvellyn, or is someone in the family up to no good?

The graphics in this game are very good. The characters are quite animated, the castle is highly realistic and all the locations are unique and interesting. Even though this game was intended to be a really scary game, personally I felt that while the creepy element was definitely called upon, the game is not as scary as it appears on the cover. Also, many people have felt that this game is "terrible" or "opposes Christianity" because of the supernatural elements in the game, such as the curse of the werewolf and the secret rituals and, my favorite, Alvin's Ghost Hunt. I feel that the previous are needed in the game as they are an important part of the plot line and sometimes add humor. (Fun slide, anyone?) All I have to say is that those closed minded people are missing out on a great experience.

Overall, I give this game 5 stars. The plot was original, the settings breathtaking and the supernatural elements quite refreshing. The puzzles are at first a bit daunting, but tie everything together perfectly. I would recommend this game to all Nancy Drew lovers of any age.

Customer Review: A review from a 10 year old girl
Summary: 2 Stars

I played this game with my dad and my cousin, we thought it would be a lot of fun, but it turned out to be close to impossible for us, even my dad. Getting through the maze, even with cheats, was incredibly hard and you need to do it many times. It says ages 10 and up. but it should say ages 20 and up , the only way to beat the game is with the cheats. Some of the game you play with the little girl are fun, but some just drive you crazy, and require way too much knowledge of astrology and chemistry and rune reading. for younger kids I would recommend a game like Shadow ranch which was easier and less scary. My little cousin (age 8) freaked out because it was so scary.

Customer Review: Excellent Mystery, a few tough puzzles!
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I love these point-and-click mysteries, and this one is the best of the five Nancy Drew ones we've tried. We've resorted to online walkthroughs in the past, but with this one we were able to do the entire thing on Senior Detective level, on our own. (Ok, so the game was written for teenagers, but who's counting?)

The puzzles really make you think, and you have to explore EVERYTHING to get all the clues. Some of the puzzles involve interpreting images which remind you of something you saw elsewhere in the castle... and when the Aha! moment comes, it's very satisfying.

Highly recommended.
