In my opinion the Rootkit/Starforce copy protection goes far beyond copy protection and flirts with being malicious software that is hidden on your computer when X3 is installed. If you are, like me, someone who has always hankered after a space role-playing game with the graphics of Freelancer and the depth of the Civilization series, you are looking at THE game. I purchased my copy in February. Yes, it was initially buggy -- but 98% of the bugs have been fixed. I routinely let the game trade for me all night and I have not had a crash recently. I don't understand why people are complaining about the interface. It is complicated, but if you are patient you will learn it and even appreciate how logical most of it is. Documentation has been substantially improved since release, and there are large FAQs available on any of the forums. The graphics are fantastic, the scope is amazing, and the gameplay is very very deep. A great buy for space traders and armchair warlords. Customer Review: I don't understand why people dislike it

disregard all the negative reviews, as 1.4 fixes all the bugs and problems everyone was complaining about. X3 is now an improvement over X2, similar, but bigger systems, more systems, more functions, etc. an expansion is also planned. if you are really concerned about bugginess, go to the forums at egosoft.com and see how no one ever seems to complain about the game, except occasionally for the fact that the publisher decided to use starforce. sorry, but I cannot write a review describing the game itself, but the X2 reviews can be consulted, and there is a demo at the egosoft siteCustomer Review: Huge game, immersive, big learning curve

A marvelous, ambitious game. The last patch, 1.4, has cleared up almost all off the game mechanics errors--I have had no crashes to the desktop or freezes since that patch. The game finally appears stable.
If you like empire building games, with a dose of heart pounding space combat action (plus some gorgeous visuals), then this may be what you are looking for. You'll need a decent graphics card, relatively recent, with a PC to match. This game is used by a number of online Gaming PC review sites because of the load it puts both on the CPU and on the graphics card.
Finally, if you are a newbie to the "X" games, as I was, make sure you spend some time browsing the forums whenever you start feeling overwhelmed or confused. They are very good about marking spoiler information so you need not worry about ruining your own discovery of the game.

I am not one for writing long reviews so here it is. I wish this company would have done more testing with its product. I guess that a big chunk of their Install Disk #2's are faulty and you have to look for a couple of hours to find out what to do. They say download this file ect... and call them so you can get a replacement disk. I called gave info. and they never called back or sent a disk. I wont bore you with the later calls but needless to say they don't care. As to the game, it stinks. My computer is, lets say, really hyped up. Spent over 2k upgrading the thing to my "gaming machine." X3 crashed every 20 min. while playing the game. After the latest patch came out, it went from 20 min. to every hour. The forums tell you to downlolad things to fix your computer to custom make YOUR computer to play THEIR game. I have never heard the like! I guess no computer is ready by it's self to play the game. You need to tweak all sorts of files and download more outside programs to get the sound right.
If you spend 5 min. reading the forums on the X3 site and seeing the mass load of problems with the game than you will never buy it. Be smart and avoid this game. Mabey next time they will make a product that works and may even beta test it. Lets hope anyway.
