Video Game Reviews of Spore

Customer Review: Boring Game and Terrible DRM
Summary: 1 Stars

I was excited by this game until I actually played it. I got this as a download as a Christmas gift and was surprised that I was limited to only a few months of being able to download it (or I could pay an additional fee for a longer download window). Luckily I didn't waste money on that additional time. The first stage is like pacman, the second stage really isn't much better, the third stage is a boring RTS game with no strategy, and, finally, the fourth stage has some neat ideas but its essentially like playing a very dumbed down version of Civilization.

There's no real creature interactions and most disappointingly of all there is nothing even remotely resembling evolutionary mechanisms. Overall really boring, really disappointing, and really over-hyped.

Customer Review: Best value we had in a game
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased the game for our 8 year-old and he loves it -- everything from creating his own characters to playing the game. He played through many times trying different senarios -- trying to win as an aggressive, vegetarian, non-violent, etc. We later purchased the Spore Galactic Adventures add on and now he is addicted to creating his own games and sharing them. After almost a year he will choose to play Spore over his DS games. I love that he is using a bit of creativity, planning skills, etc. and still enjoying blowing things up. It was the best $30 we've spent on a game.

Customer Review: Very Great
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, first things first: Maxis/EA stopped producing Spore with the DRM. You don't have to worry about that if you get a new copy. If you get a newer copy, there are instructions on spore.com on how to get rid of it.

Now that that's out of the way, onto the review.

Spore is actually a very fun game. Although the Space stage can get kind of dull after you've gone to the center of the galaxy and earned master badge level ten, it's still fun evolving your creature from a single-cell to a galactic warlord/shaman/trader/diplomat/zealot/knight/bard/ecologist/scientist/wanderer. Even if you've beaten the Space Stage 10 times, there are still those achievements to get. If you just like creating better, then you're not alone. (50/50 on that; it's fun to play and build).

Needless to say, if you get the expansion packs, it makes it all the better.

The cell stage is probably the most boring, but luckily, it's very short if you set your mind to it. Do it under eight minutes, you get one of those achievements I was talking about.

Customer Review: Great game...Check your hardware first!
Summary: 4 Stars

My son asked for Spore after playing it at a friend's house. We ordered it and the adventure began. Our one year old computer needed more memory, a graphics card and a new power supply to power the graphics card. The hardware upgrades came to about $200. Now he has a great gaming machine. We really enjoy playing the game. Just check out the hardware requirements first. We went with the BFG 9800 GT and a BFG GS 550 watt power supply. Both were effortless installations.

Customer Review: DO NOT INSTALL! Permanent RootKit from SecuROM!
Summary: 1 Stars

Hi,

Based on having the Spore game simply stop working a few months after installation and then trying to fix it, this MIT graduate can give you a few hints:
1. This installation leaves behind a rootkit that cannot be easily removed. To remove it you have to go into Windows "RegEdit" function. If you make an error while using regedit, you could end up having to re-install your operating system.

2. EA's online help info in this area is pretty useless.

3. Kids do like the game, but it is simply not worth your time or the risk to your PC. There are reasonably credible reports on the web indicating damage to the operating system in some machines from the rootkit.

4. My family will no longer purchase ANY PC games from EA, or any other vendor, with this form of Digital Rights Management (DRM). We suggest you do the same and let EA and the others know about your decision.
