Video Game Reviews of NASCAR Sim Racing

Customer Review: Look anywhere but here for fun racing
Summary: 1 Stars

There are two types of computer racers: those who play it as a simple game and those who treat it as a simulation.

With that said, regardless of which type you are, this game is completely unplayable. If you attempt to run any race with the full NASCAR rules enabled, you will be disqualified from that race as soon as a yellow flag comes out. So, if you are the type of player who wants a simulation of NASCAR, you're simply wasting your money here.

If you are simply looking for something to drive and don't mind turning off the yellow flags, you can run the races and have *some* fun. The tracks look great, the cars look OK and the physics has been dumbed down so it's easy to drive. Still, you can only play this game offline without yellow flags. Online is incredibly buggy (with a lot of 'warping' where other cars appear/disappear, float, blink in and out, etc.).

For the time and effort EA supposedly put into this, and for the fact they call this game NASCAR *SIM* RACING, I give this one star. It fails to meet up to the name on the box in every aspect. You can't use the NASCAR rules. It certainly cannot be played in true *sim* fashion. The only RACING that can be done is if you disable every aspect of the game that makes it a NASCAR game in the first place.

You're better off finding an old copy of NASCAR RACING 2003 from Papyrus (if you're looking for a simulation) or buying any number of other games (F1, CART, Open Wheel-type racing games) that do not contain the bugs this game has.

One last note: EA support is non-existant. I have emailed, called, written and visited/posted on their website literally hundreds of times. I've gotten exactly one answer that contained one sentence: "We are aware of the problems of the yellow flags and are releasing a patch". This was 365 days ago and the patch, as already stated by other reviewers, did not fix the problem. EA released a statement that said more patches were on the way. As to date, no other patches have been released and EA has stopped updating it's website on this product. I'm not one for boycotting products, but in this case, I make an exception. EA will not get my money again. As it stands, I believe EA owes me $39.99 for purchasing a product that failed to deliver anything they promoted on the box, on it's website and in it's advertisements.

Customer Review: Junk in a Box

Once again the mighty EA flushes a license down the toilet. With no competition (ala Papy), they can release feces on a stick and people will buy it. You abolutely CANNOT race a full race due to the bugs in this game. The flag bug WILL bite you and bite you hard. A second patch was promised back in the Spring and here I am looking at 2006 next week with no patch in sight. Absolute garbage. Get an old copy of Papy's Nascar Racing 2003 instead.

I wish i would have read all these reviews before i bought this.
There is alot of things i really don't care for in the game,
like navigation and audio setup. but i could deal with the rest
if only the flag rules were better. I've been disqualified so
many times for nothing. its hard to finish a race at all.
and yes the computer drivers cars are glued to the track.
you have to really drive hard into someone to wreck them.
if you smash your car up good , race over. done. don't get to
look at anything. even if you win the race, game over.
no lap times, nothing.
very very disappointed. like pap nascar 4 and 3. but can't race
4 online. guess i'll have to load the 3 again.

Customer Review: Absolute junk.

Once again, EA has graced us with a completely worthless NASCAR game. If having competition (Papyrus) for previous releases didn't spur them to try to do better, what makes you think they would put out a superb effort with NO competition? James Hawkins has replaced former mouthpiece and propaganda-meister Ed Martin for this version, and has seemed to have learned the art of BS very well. Shoddy physics, buggy rules implementation, inability to have 43 racers online at one time, missing car makes, the EA way is back in full force.

Despite this dreck of a product, there is one diamond in the rough. The cockpit is the best looking one ever seen in any NASCAR game, even surpassing that from Papyrus' standard setting NASCAR Racing 2003 Season. Whoever was the artist on it did a truly masterful job.

But a pretty cockpit is not worth putting up with this mess. You'd be better served simply flushing your $40 down your home toilet: it would be quicker, and would not waste precious resources such as gas (in shipping it). The only thing keeping this product from attaining Daikatana status is the fact it took 18 months to finish. Then again, considering this is merely a sloppy rehash of the NASCAR Thunder code base, 18 months spent on this does boost it into the same realm as Mr. Romero's infamous P.O.S.

If you enjoy getting ulcers, want to tear your hair out in frustration, or enjoy screaming at things that do not work, then this definitely is the game for you. Otherwise, take a cue from Nancy Reagan and JUST SAY NO.

Customer Review: race sims are suppossed to be a stress reliever.

I picked up this game within the first week or so of it hitting the shelves. After dealing with the flag issues on just about everytime I played, I put it away and waited for a patch to be released to try again. After downloading the patch I loaded up, hit the track, was running in the lead, caution came out, slowed and followed the pace car per the screen directions and when the green flag came out I was disqualified. The graphics are nice the sound is really fantastic but the playability is hiddious. I have so many mods and extra tracks for Nascar Racing 2003 that I will just keep playing that until someone can show me that the folks at EA really put out something that does not get me in trouble with the wife for "getting mad at the dumb game".
