Video Game Reviews of Medal of Honor AirborneCustomer Review: It's fun but beware of some things Summary: 3 StarsI got this as part of the MoH 10th Anniversary edition, not when it first came out. Since I didn't buy Pacific Assault either when it first came out, there was more bang for the buck (no pun intended). Now I just have to figure what to do with my old (and extra) copies of Allied Assault, Spearhead and Breakthrough. :)
Here's a mix of the good and the bad:
I'll have to start off with the utter stupidity of the installation process. Many people already have a later version of the PhysX software installed; what were the developers thinking by having Airborne "insist" on installing the older version included with it? Why not give us the option of skipping it, just like so many games give the option of skipping the installation of DirectX? Unless someone knows of another way, you must uninstall the newer PhysX you're using, install Airborne and then reinstall the newer PhysX you were already using. And set aside about 2.3 gigabytes of storage space for the v1.2 and 1.3 patches you'll need.
Out of the entire MoH series, Airborne has the best graphics. But it has been surpassed by a contemporary like CoD 4 and even an older game like Half-Life 2. The music quality is still there, but I suspect it's because some of it was used in Allied Assault.
I like the weapon upgrades since it's basically reward for skill. I also found it amusing that using a specific weapon for melee kills also counts. I wish there were upgrades such as a scope for the Garand; it might not be historically accurate, but if you can see P40 Warhawks in the European Theater, why not a scoped Garand? And apparently, STILL, no one (that makes games like this at least) has learned that the Garand has a clip latch so you can eject and reload anytime you want.
How in the world does looking down the sights of a gun prevent you from moving? You can lean, but that's all.
You can't go prone, but you can start running while crouched and then stop and you'll automatically crouch. Useful when running for cover, but I still wish you could go prone.
And what's up with this checkpoint only lunacy? The people that do this aren't fooling any players into thinking that the game is more challenging or that it's longer than it really is. But at least it's easier to live with this checkpoint setup in Airborne because completing an objective counts as a checkpoint and toward overall mission progress; even if you die before completing another objective, you don't have to repeat any previously completed objectives.
Each mission has five "skill drop" points. They're interesting challenges that can only be accomplished at the start of the mission, but be aware of the fact that after a certain point in the mission, the progress you've made will prevent you from trying to get those skill drops unless you wish to start the whole mission over.
And beware of the AI being less than smart. I've seen the enemy throw a grenade at a computer generated ally and then run into that same grenade! And I've lost count of how often the computer generated allies go to the SAME spot I'm using for cover and get in front of me, even while I'm shooting at an enemy! Watch out for the "don't shoot" warning.
