Video Game Reviews of Madden NFL 2004

Customer Review: TWO MORE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I truly enjoyed Madden 2004. I am patiently waiting for the 2005, but I have had a ball the last year playing this game. The control you have over players and even the plays make for some fun filled hours. I strongly suggest that anyone who has not tried it to give it a go, the price is right and you will be ready for some football!!

Customer Review: This game sucks
Summary: 1 Stars

I downloaded the demo version on my PC. It doesn't even let you play it. You have to watch the computer play a boring game--with no action. The sounds and features are NOT exciting. I'd rather play Techmo Bowl from Nintendo. I have a mouse and keyboard, so I don't even know how I would play this game. There were no instructions, and all the "features" were "not available in demo mode." So what, I have to buy it for $20 to see if I like it? EA Sports is a large, rich company that can afford to let us play the game before buying--after all, they did with MVP Baseball. Until someone proves me otherwise, and until I shell-out money for a decent USB-joystick, I say THIS GAME SUCKS!!!

Customer Review: Honest Madden 2004 Review (PC Version)
Summary: 5 Stars

Unlike previous version of Madden (which I loved) this version is free from bugs, flows smoothly, looks great and is very customizable. I prefer to play with my own teams and players rather than NFL teams; I previous versions of Madden it took my a whole day to just setup the logos, uniforms and team data. With Madden 2004 I was able to do it in two hours. The menu transitions are very fast and the pauses that were present in previous versions are gone. This game is an asset to my computer, I am even going to order another copy for backup. If the graphics get any better I won't need to watch football on TV at all!

Customer Review: Football
Summary: 3 Stars

It is kinda fun, but it will only please hardcore football fans. Personally, I give it a C+. I don't like the inaccuracy but if you like football a lot, this is the game for you

Customer Review: Same ol` same ol`
Summary: 3 Stars

I`ll try and keep it as short as possible:

Great graphics and `feel` to the game Personally I didn`t have a problem with the controls but I can see where some people are coming from with their complaints. I totally disagree with the idea of letting the AI take control over the moves of the player you`re controlling. Surely there has to be some skill.

I agree that there is a certain amount of `randomness` to the game. Loads of fumbles and picks can spoil the fun. I played the other night and both my corners left the game with 5 picks each, 7 were returned for a score (set on Madden level). I`m sure there are other people out there who have had their WR with a catching of 90 have a ball come straight at `em and have it bounce off their head! Yeah...happens every day 8-P.

The Franchise mode is a waste of time IMO. While it`s nice to build a stadium, it serves no purpose. There really is no explanation as to why you want to hire or fire coaches, I see no difference no matter who`s in charge. I think this is true of a lot of the game however. It would be nice to get a better description of what the player stats actually do etc. The fact that there isn`t anything is worrying as it leads me to believe that it really is just a bunch of numbers doing random calculations.

As usual the drafting of players is awful. You have no idea as to their stats until you actually sign the player. Surely by scouting the player you`d have some idea in game terms as to their speed etc. Just save you picks and use them to trade for better players. Rarely is it worth signing a rookie. For example you could use a 1st round pick and maybe draft a 75ish lineman. Or you could use the same pick and get a guy who`s been in the league a year and is around an 80! You choose. The whole drafting/free agent thing needs changing.

As usual there is often no link to player stats and performance on the field. You can have a 99 DT having problems with a 70 G who`s as weak as the US foreign policy and he gets no where. The is particularly true of the right defence end who never performs as well as the left. QB accuracy doesn`t seem to come in to play a great deal. I`ve seen QB`s with an accuracy of around 60 pick apart a good pass D all day apart from the 8 INT`s 8-P. I dunno, just doesn`t seem realistic enough.

The playbooks are okay although building your own is grief as it`s a bit buggy.

I`d like to see - bigger off the ball hits; players slipping over sometimes; Fumbled snaps or hand-off (But please not 10 in a game); The ability to consistently stop the pass against the CPU if you had a good enough D; Line-play consistent with the players stats; Weather and pitch surface making a difference; Players getting assists on Tackles; The ability to assign a DB to a specific player for the whole game; A point to having to choose a players hair style other than for when someone knocks his lid of; EA actually listening to peoples suggestions.

Overall - I play the game looking for realism. I`d gladly sacrifice being able to have pink uniforms and a super stadium in return for better features on the field. I reckon all we`ll see next year from EA is a feature allowing you to choose the half time entertainment is on the Superbowl.
