Customer Review: Good Graphics but Subject Game play

I have owned all of the FIFA titles since their inception, and this one does offer refinements in visual/graphics, especially in the smooth animated replays, etc. The players do react with more realism, i.e. if you shoot the ball and an opponent is in the line of fire, the ball bounces off of them, and the opponent stumbles to the ground. Despite the added realism, I still find the game play a little to be desired. To make long passes you need to do a through pass (not really directed at another player) or do a long lob pass. The crisp clean snap passes of FIFA 99 (still my favorite version) are non-existent - when you pass the ball it travels slowly - Yes, you can speed up game play a bit, but the ball never seems to make it as far as you could kick it in real life. Thus, it is easier to intercept passes just by walking in the way of them. While the players move smoothly and look great on screen, it just isn't as fun to play as FIFA 99. I didn't like FIFA 2000 much at all for its game play either. It takes forever to build up a nice one touch, crisp passing offensive move, because the weak passes prohibit you from using players more than a few yards away from you (unless you do a long lob). Maybe I am missing something, but the game play just doesn't encapture me as much as I thought it would. NHL 2001 is much more fun to play than this hands down. If ranked into diff categories, I would give FIFA 2001 a score of 5 for graphics and 3 for game play.

Ever since Electronic Arts started the FIFA series it has been the one to beat, and this years installment is no exception. The gameplay and graphics have been tweaked over past versions, and I find the game to run much smoother than last years game. I love being able to see the correct players faces on even the most obscure teams. There really isn't much to say besides this is the best soccer (or football) game there is available today. Every aspect you will love. So many teams, players and stadiums to enjoy. If you are a soccer fan and have the computer to run this, you should definetly get it.

I was watching a football match on TV... on wait, it's just the new fifa game... they made the pitch bigger, they added the linesman... on each side :), the players look like their respective real life counterparts (and move like them as well), the stadiums (not many though) look stunning, they brought back the great commentators back... good lord people, even if you're not a gamer, get yourself this game, so when they're showing golf on ESPN, just load this game up and watch some football!
