Video Game Reviews of Sam & Max: Season One

Customer Review: Review from a Non-Adventure Perspective
Summary: 4 Stars

Warning: parts of this review contain spoilers of the game.

Now, I played Sam and Max Hit the Road way back in the day. I cheated like crazy in that game by reading a guide to get me through it.

I read a bunch of reviews that said that this game was very simple, so I decided to pick it up during a sale that was going on.

For some of the puzzles, I personally felt clueless as to what the next step was. I will tip my hat to the people that realized that you rub the unicorn, and it was actually the friction and heat of your hand that was changing the color of the unicorn's horn, and thus you should heat it up by microwaving it. Yeah, I rubbed it, and did not have a clue that was why, so I tried to give the unicorn to other people that are a part of prismatology.

I do understand that if I did not know how to solve a certain puzzle, I could just try the single item with everything possible, but honestly, that is very tedious. I read a guide that said that I would have gotten a big clue about the unicorn if I had tried to put it under the rocket engine. That seems like a silly thing to do to it.

I am not going to rant about that, I am simply giving an example of some of the stuff that happened while I was personally playing so that others reading it that do not play adventure games, like myself, will understand.

The graphics are not Crysis, but if you want to compare graphical improvements, this is a huge leap from the pixelized Sam and Max from the dos game Hit the Road. I thought the graphics were incredibly good for this game seeing as I played through Hit the Road.

The voice acting I personally enjoyed. Some of the jokes were very dumb, but some of the jokes had me chuckling.

The music was pretty good.

The way that each episode is presented made me feel as though I was playing through a television show of sorts. Well, it is a game, not a show, but the way they split this up into episodes and then released them as a season was very cool.

Now since this is an adventure game, there is little to no replay value unless you want to try more combinations of using items with stuff to see if you get more quirky comments from Sam or Max.

Basically, this game is pretty fun. The reason why this game did not get 5 stars is because it is a good game, but there is really not much replay value in this game. The issue with replay value is that when I truly got stuck in a place, I did not want to read a guide and felt guilty doing it. Onec I read what I needed to do and it now seemed easy, I felt cheated since I had no idea what I should have done, and now there is no way for me to get more puzzles to try out with this game outside of playing another adventure game.

There were times when I knew what needed to happen, but did not collect everything in order to make that happen or I did not talk to enough people to make that happen (Abe Lincoln episode that happened to me alot).

There were a couple more puzzles that seemed to be similar to the unicorn one where I would say out loud to my monitor, "Well, How in the world would I have known to do that?" once I read the guide. Really, most of the puzzles give you at the very minimum a good hint as to what you need to do, and then you need to figure it out on your own. That gameplay style is very cool.

Difficulty does not drive a rating. The replay does though. Also, since this game is built around doing puzzles, if most puzzles give you even a subtle hint, and then others do not, really, it will confuse non adventure people like myself who are constantly trying to get into these games, but can;t figure out the puzzles. Even though I really stumbled through this game (just like I did Hit the Road), I could see through that and I still enjoyed the game.

I would reccomend people who have not played adventure games before to start with something even simpler than this like Beavis and Butthead on Sega Genesis. Yes, that game also has an adventure style to it as well. Sure, there are action elements, but it is mostly adventure.

Also, Stupid Invaders on the Sega Dreamcast is another one that is far simpler. For people that play adventure games, Sam and Max Season One will just be a walk in the park, but for us that do not normally play this style of game, we will not see the "light at the end of the tunnel" on every single puzzle, and this game will be a little more difficult.

This is still, overall, a pretty fun game.
