Customer Review: This is the "prequel" to Still Life
Summary: 4 Stars
I played Still Life before I found Post Mortem, but Gus is in both. In Post Mortem he is the main character, and there is a slight detour as another PI. In Still Life, you are Gus's grand daughter (FBI agent), with detours as Gus in 1920's Prague.
Post Mortem is more complicated, slightly frustrating in places, and isn't as polished a product as Still Life. Still, it was worth the $7.28 (includes shipping!) I paid for it.
Paris must be a pretty grim place - at least in 1920. The film noir aspect has been mentioned by others, and is certainly the mood setter. The story is complicated, with a couple of surprizes. Multiple identities, false documents, supernatural aspects, a really devious female, and a whole lot of people we would, today, call "players". Everyone seems to have an angle. To the very end of the game, and beyond, you are still wondering whether the perp is insane, or if what he believes (and tells you) is true. I could argue both sides with the evidence revealed.
This is the first of three similar titles. In order they are: Post Mortem, Still Life, Still Life 2. I've played the first two, and have the third on pre-order. I like to finish a series.
Now for the problems.
On my computer, the game locked up while conversing with the resident clairvoyant in the hotel. I found a patch for this, and other problems, on the Adventure Company website (1.35Meg). For those having massive slowdown problems, get the patch. It fixes a bug with P4 processors - especially those with multiple cores. After installing the patch, everything went well until I clicked on the Sketchbook. The computer locked up, and I had to hit the reset button to get out of it. This, I eventually discovered, was because of my video driver. Since AMD took over ATI, I think the driver writers have been replaced. On two different ATI cards, the game (and Media Player) will not work. I put in my old, reliable GeForce 3 ti200, and finished the game with no further difficulties - on native windows drivers.
