Video Game Reviews of Black MirrorCustomer Review: Pretty good, until the end Summary: 3 StarsI received this game some time ago and decided to leave my "two cents worth." I guess that I really don't have too much new to add to the things already stated. I typically like adventure games that have a good plot, nice screen images to pull you into the story and challenging, but not too difficult puzzles. This game came through on most of those requirements. It was spooky at times, especially since I usually play at night in a dark and quiet room. The plot kept me interested and the puzzles were not too difficult. Most of the story sequence made sence. BUT, I agree with most of the other reviews, the voice acting was horrible. I could have lived with that, but the ENDING is absolutely AWFUL. I couldn't believe that I had basically wasted my time with this game to get to the ending. It was unnecessary and really did not fit with the rest of the plot.
Customer Review: Atmospheric, mildly interesting game ruined by terrible ending. Summary: 3 StarsI'm not really all that interested in adventure games for the PC, to be honest. I was really into them on the Commodore 64 back in the 80s, which is weird considering how much more visual and dynamic they are these days. The Black Mirror does have some gorgeous graphics and an impressively Gothic atmosphere, but it's ruined by perpetual slowness and many, many scenes of long, long conversations.
Samuel Gordon (the most arrogant man in a video-game ever) is the wayward heir to the Gordon Manor (Black Mirror Castle) who returns to his rural England roots when his grandfather is killed in suspicious circumstances. It's up to you to guide him around the Manor and village, talking to people and investigating.
Typical 'adventure' gameplay mechanics are involved in progressing through the chapters. Which is fine, but when the game makes you wait for other characters to do stuff for you, boy does it make you WAIT. I've had the game running for over 6 hours while other characters waste you're time doing stuff for you (or not doing it rather). And there's nothing else for YOU do to when this is going on. It's infuriating.
The ending to the game is profoundly weak. A lame twist I should have seen coming is capped-off with dull, whogivesadamn cut-scene and then the end credits. When I play a game for so long I expect more than that! It also leaves many questions unanswered. Who EXACTLY killed William Gordon? Where did Uncle Robert really go? What's the deal with Samuel's long-dead lover? How did the Priest not find the secret crypt halfway through the game? Why is it set in 1981?
I was impressed with the game at first but in the last third it got pretty damn tiresome and the end is no real pay-off. For serious adventure gamers ONLY.
Customer Review: Awesome game/storyline... unsatisfying ending. Summary: 4 StarsThe Black Mirror is definitly on the top of my list of games I love. The moody atmosphere, the beautiful backrounds and haunting sounds all make for a gloomy but beautiful gaming experience. There are, however, flaws.
The ending is horrible. You're ever more interested in what is about to happen next, when, BAM, all of a sudden, it's over.
I was more horrified at the end of this game then I have been horrified while playing any horror game!
The cut scenes aren't all that great visually, which made me wish they weren't even in the game at all. And the dialogue is sometimes... stiff.
BUT. Don't let this turn you away from playing The Black Mirror. It's a gaming experience I still think of fondly, and I am still hanging onto some hope that the company who made The Black Mirror will come out with a sequal explainining what the hoo happens next.
To summerize: Beautiful and moody, but with a dissapointing end.
Customer Review: Okay, but scary to me...... Summary: 2 StarsThe graphics, like everyone else has said, are gorgeous. The acting is terrible. The game definitely should keep its horror rating. It is gory. There's a ton of action that happens in a morgue! There's also a very scary scene in which you're talking to a man in a mental ward through a peep hole in an adjacent cell. But the worst part of this game, and the part that makes it able to keep the horror rating, is the satanic stuff at the end. Very creepy and very unnecessary. They could have ended the game without all of that. Not a game for children.
Customer Review: Good, but too much talk Summary: 3 StarsIm all for a well made story incorporated into a game, heck it's practically a requirement for adventure games to have, but what I cannot tolerate is designers insistence on shoving 10 minutes of plot down the players throat followed by an hour of gameplay, and then repeating the process..While Black Mirror doesnt neccesarily exploit that concept, their detatchment from gameplay to plot is noticeable, giving players too many gaps between learning of the story, and experiencing it..Having said that, this game has a nice dark atmosphere to it, plenty of beautiful artwork, and will keep you playing for a long time if you are willing to enjoy it to the end..
