This Windows 95 program (run perfectly in XP and Vista)
has a disappointing and rudimentary interface.
On the other hand, it is the most serious program
that doesn't lost the focus on chess in favor of silly distractions.
My kids start to use it when they were 6. Before to start, it is better
to go through the "Chess tactics for Beginners" at least
three times achieving a 60 percent score.
These programs are great investment. The 1,000+ puzzles can be used for years.

Quickly improve your chess play through tactical prowess with this terrific testing and training program, intended for intermediate players. Among the topics covered: mating combinations, pinning combinations, decoying, blockade, and the Exchange. The many detailed exercises are arranged in 19 sections according to their increasing difficulty. All the sections contain exercises for both Practice and Test, and after a problem has been solved a rating is produced. This rating is based on the difficulty of the problem, the time taken, and errors made (if any). The original rating is adjusted up or down after each exercise, so that results can be monitored - see your improvement immediately! The program includes positions from practical games, endgame studies as well as training examples. Multiple user profiles are also possible, with independent ratings and all other individual information. Statistics are stored and can be compared between the different users. Perfect for students who have already mastered the basics, this CD builds on knowledge of tactics already acquired and leads the student deeper into the art of combination in chess.
