Video Game Reviews of DarkStar One (DVD-Rom)Customer Review: The real fun ends around the Thul/Octo Summary: 3 StarsHmm, This is a very old game but as I have just finished it, I thought I would add (little) to the older comments on the game. It should be seeing some new buyers (like me) as it has hit the clearance bins and is now on STEAM. I had no problems with any bugs and I did not load any patches.
Anyway, the game controls (I used mouse / keyboard) are easy. The game itself is easy to understand. In no mission did I not understand exactly what to do. Everything is clearly laid out on the mission stories. This game is a one trick pony. If you like to the trick, you will love this game.
The trick is a light arcade style dog-fighter sim. However, this is somewhat diminished by the 'special' abilities that you ship has that no-one else has anything like. So by the end of the game, you can dive into multiple rounds of 8 of the most powerful opponents in the game and likely come away only lightly damaged if you do use your special powers. In my game, I eventually had 4 forward guns and 3 turrets. The three turrets could kill opponents just about as fast as I could swing the ship around to see the opponents. Certainly, the opponent would have all or most of his shields reduced. In a lot of cases, a single shot would kill the opponent. So the difficulty curve is low to start, rises to its highest point around the time you meet the Raptors. After that, the difficulty drops with every increase in your firepower / turret count.
Raptors have a habit of jumping around making it difficult to target them and you only have a single lower power turret. They shoot missiles which heavily damage your shields. When facing 8 of these opponents, the missiles take out your shields and their light guns can quickly produce damage. Obviously, there are ways to deal with the Raptors and most of the time, only a couple Raptors will be in any group. By the time I met the Octo and the Thul, my weapons were sufficient to kill the first two in the head on rush and have severely damage a third as they went by.
The game to me had a serious design flaw when fighting the final battles. Seriously, in the final battles, I could literally sit still and rotate. I could obliterate the opponents so fast that what little they could do to my normal shields was not enough to even get a scratch on the ship. So the end game was completely trivial. This made the game end badly for me. Just played to get through to the final cut scene.
In the final sequence, I was particularly irked by the designers notion that they would change everything breaking consistency. It was not 'hard' in the sense of needing skill. It was only hard because multiple controls were mysteriously disabled with no in game explanation. In addition, the designers decided that your opponents should now be untargetable and even if you perched right in front of them, you could not damage them. Other things were introduced as well to see how well you could hold your pointer in the center of the screen. I assume that they assumed that I would proceed through everything on afterburner. Maybe then it would make sense. Probably not.
So play the game if you can get it cheap as in below $5 cheap. When you get into the arrak clusters stop there. It gets no better and the ending will spoil your memory of the rest of the game.
Oh and the space exploration is pointless. Trust me. Just do the missions. The rest is severely pointless as in I get money but I need only 1% of it to buy everything I am allowed to buy. So what if I have zillons of dollars if there is NOTHING to purchase.
