You can be one of four classes: Engineer, Medic, Lieutenant, or Soldier, each with unique properties. For example, Medics are the only ones that can heal or revive people. There are no random med kits lying around so you must rely on the medics to come help you when you're inured or you're dead. On the other hand, lieutenants are the only ones that can dish out ammo. Sure you can pick up dropped weapons but ultimately, everyone must rely on lieutenants for ammo. In addition, lieutenants have the ability to call for an airstrike that obliterates everything in its vicinity. A soldier is the only one that can wield every weapon available in the multiplayer mode. In addition to the standard knife, pistol and machine guns, a soldier can choose to carry a sniper rifle, a rocket launcher, a flamethrower or a rail gun. You don't want to carry that rocket launcher anymore? No problem, drop the weapon pick up another one off the ground. Finally the engineers are the only ones that carry dynamites. They are crucial in most games since most maps require blowing something up with dynamites.
Because of the class distinction, everyone must cooperate to complete the mission objectives. A team without any one class will lose and lose quickly. Therefore, the days of running around and doing everything by yourself is over. Ofcourse, if you're really good, you can do that but it's very difficult especially on larger maps.
There are litereally hundreds of public servers to join and there are always games available to you. One of the best parts of RTCW is that you can communicate instantly with a built in voice communication system. All you need to do is press a combination of keys and voila, you can tell your teammates about the enemy's position. You can also talk globally to both teams... . If you'd rather type a long message, then you can do that too.
Each map is unique with different objectives such as destroying the enemy communication center with dynamites or stealing a top secret code book and broadcasting it over the radio. However, since there usually are sub-objectives leading up to the primary objectives, the game is very difficult.
Finally, you can play different types of games on the same map. The standard multiplayer mode allows you to pick one side (Axis or Allies) and stay on that team for as long as you'd like. Stopwatch mode allows each team to beat the other team's previous time to complete the primary objective. Finally there's the good-old capture the flag mode.
Therefore, I urge you not to judge RTCW based on its single player mode. The single player mode is simply a warm up to one of the best and versatile games ever created. If you have cable or faster connection, then you must try the multiplayer. I promise you that you won't be disappointed.
NOTE: The multiplayer is very fast and may be frustrating at first. It does take a lot of practice to get used to. Also, the opponents are usually very good so you will be killed a lot. I mean a lot and even more. Learning the map is half the battle so stay on one map until you know it inside out. Remember to always aim for the head and don't get caught standing around.
