Video Game Reviews of Sid Meier's Civilization IV Special EditionCustomer Review: Best Game of the Year ! Summary: 5 StarsDefinitely the Best Civilization Yet - buy it and prepare to be addicted.
Customer Review: All frustration, no fun Summary: 1 StarsI bought this game a few weeks before Thanksgiving and have not been able to complete a game at any of the more advanced levels since. THIS GAME IS UNPLAYABLE.
This version was rushed to market, is full of bugs and glitches, and will only deliver FRUSTRATION, not fun. If you are confused by some of these reviews, check out any of the Civilization fan sites and read the message boards:

In addition to explaining the fun of the Civilization franchise, they clearly discuss why you should NOT buy this version and wait for Firaxis and 2K to come out with a complete product.
My machine is a Pentium 4, 3.3GHz, 1024 MB RAM (76% unutilized), GeForce 6600, 256 RAM, 40 GB free on C: drive -- WELL ABOVE the "Recommended" system design -- yet this program still freezes, displays random blocks of color or blanks, and eventually crashes to desktop.
The fan sites are full of horror stories with folks tweaking .INI files, overclocking video cards, trialing 4 and 5 generations of video drivers, changing screen resolution, etc., etc., in an effort to get this game to work. Do you really have to be a gaming programmer or electrical engineer just to play the game???? All frustration, no fun.
For experienced Civ fans, Civ IV is a radical departure from past versions and has a completely new interface. There are many new variations to try and paths to explore. In the early stages of the game it is as much fun as all previous versions and just as addictive. (Now they give you a clock and alarm feature so you can get to sleep!) However, you never know how well your strategy is, because the game can never be completed.
Civilization is clearly one of the great game franchises out there, along with the likes of Sims and Grand Theft Auto, with a huge embedded fan base. There are legions of loyal fans that will keep this title a million-plus seller for as long as they can keep improving it. That is what makes this version of the game SO frustrating. There's no improvement.
Save your money and wait for Firaxis and 2K to get their act together and solve the glitches with this game. With huge numbers of fans screaming, hopefully it won't take too long.
Unless you like frustration...............
Customer Review: Game Does Not Live Up To Lofty Standards Summary: 3 StarsAfter playing this I'm wondering if this is a Beta Test.
First of all the game is hard. There is too big an advantage given to defenses in this game. In the game I'm playing I have Marines and Modern Infantry losing in battle to Long Archers! I don't care what their defensive bonuses are it's not going to happen in real life. And this advantage given to defenses is going to make it very hard to expand especially in the early game. It's true that you can expand your bordres with culture, but don't count on using this approach to conquer to civilizations and you can lose cities especially newly conquered one's this way.
Another problem, is that with Air and Naval units you cannot defeat units you can only weaken them, which is stupid. Furthermore, there are wonder movies but not for all the wonders, especially the ones later in the game. And the wonder movies are a major step back from the ones in Civilization II. And there's a ton of wonders but they're not very fun. The ending movies aren't great. I was able to view them outside of the game and they're short and pretty dull.
Another problem is that the game is too automated, there is too much structure, there are not random events (like you see in the Civ II scenarious). The game just isn't that fun.
Customer Review: Great Upgrade to Classic game, BUT still crashing after patch Summary: 4 StarsI just love the gameplay upgrades in Civ 4. I have been playing Civ since the Dos version and I really appreciate them getting rid of some of the micromanage stuff that can make the game less fun, especially in the later turns of the game when you have a lot of cities. The 3D helps visualize the world a lot better and it looks great. But it still crashes on my very decent 1 year old system after I installed the patch. This would be perfect if the coding would have been better to make the game more stable.
Customer Review: Works for Me Summary: 4 StarsI don't see what the big deal is... I bought this game and then was afraid to open it after reading numerous posts here about how it doesn't work, full of bugs, etc. I have a nice system but nothing outrageous (HP Pentium 4 @ 3 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5200)... It installed fine (although the discs appeared to be mislabeled - not an uncommon occurance according to the posts here) but I did download the patch immediately just to be safe. At first I hated the game - you have to understand I was a complete CIV3 addict when I used to play that game and I just didn't like all the changes at first and hated the new graphics. However, after about 3 hours of play I was like OK I love it this rocks I am hooked all over again.
